The Chargers finished second at the meet with 198 points, just three behind meet champion Grand Valley State. The team got a big number of impressive performances, led by senior Nate English, who improved on his own school record in the shot put.

English won the event with a throw of 55 feet, 3 ¾ inches, nearly six feet better than his nearest competitor, who happened to be teammate John Banovetz. The sophomore also set a new career-best with a second-place toss of 49 feet, 7 ¼ inches.

Banovetz would find his event to shine in, achieving an NCAA provo mark with a winning throw of 50.00 meters in the discus throw.

“The men competed well today. A huge number of personal best marks,” said head men’s track coach Jeff Forino. “We keep improving every week! I am very pleased with the marks we produced today and the direction we are heading.”

In all, seven Chargers won events on their home track Saturday.

Justin Fawley was also a stand out in the field events, taking first place in the long jump (6.76 m) and second in the high jump (2.00 m).

On the track, indoor All-American Maurice Jones pleased the home fans by winning the 400 meter hurdles in 53.73 seconds. Teammate Matt Raffin also had a pair of excellent times in the two hurdle events, finishing second in both the 110 meter (15.06) and 400 meter version of the races.

Jones helped the team’s 4x400 relay team to its best time in more than a decade, winning the final race of the day in 3:16.67. Michael Finch, Elliot Murphy and Jared Van Dyke teamed up with Jones for the win.

On the distance side, senior Jacob Secor notched yet another win in the 1500 meter run, clearing the field with a time of 3:56.12, a new career-best. Secor has been one of the men’s track team’s most regular winners in this outdoor season.

Other athletes achieving lifetime bests at home included Finch and Van Dyke in the 400 and Murphy in the 110 hurdles.
