Ken Myers of the Mars Hill Audio Journal to Speak During Faith in Life Lecture Series
“Music and the Great Tradition”
January 22-23
Ken Myers, Executive Producer of the Mars Hill Audio Journal, will deliver three lectures on “Music and the Great Tradition” as part of Hillsdale College’s Faith in Life lecture series. The lectures will also feature musical performances from Hillsdale College students, notably Edwin Culver performing a suite of Renaissance lute pieces on guitar on Tuesday. The schedule for lectures is:
• Tuesday, January 22 at 5 p.m. in the Dow Center Campbell Room;
• Tuesday, January 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dow Center Campbell Room; and
• Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dow Center Phillips Auditorium.
The Dow Center is located at 22 E Galloway, Hillsdale, Michigan, 49242.
The theme of these lectures will be that objective criteria exist for assessing the greatness of music, that on the strength of those criteria one might construct a “canon” of Great Music analogous to the canon of Great Literature in the West, and that Christianity has been vital to the development and greatness of the Western music tradition.
The Faith in Life lecture series addresses the relationship between religious faith and the practical life of scholarship in its various disciplines.
