Gravel signs two more players to incoming volleyball class
April 24, 2007 - The 2007 Hillsdale College volleyball roster is now set, after head coach Chris Gravel signed two more players to the team's incoming freshman class.

Defensive specialist Sydney Dow (Jonesville, Mich.) and middle hitter Amanda Geelhoed (Grand Rapids, Mich., Lowell High School) join early signees Rachel VanderWall and Amanda Bigney to make up the freshman class of 2007 for the Hillsdale College volleyball team.

Dow, from nearby Jonesville High School, is one of that school's most decorated female athletes. She was a four-year starter in volleyball for the Comets, and earned four letters in basketball and track. She won or shared volleyball team MVP honors three times, set school records in assists and attempts, was Academic All-Conference four times, and was named All-Region twice. The Jackson Citizen Patriot named Dow to its Dream Team after the 2006-07 season, and she was a two-time Hillsdale All-Area pick.

In addition to all of her volleyball accolades, Dow was also a record-setting track athlete at Jonesville, representing the team at the state track meet twice while also being named team MVP. In basketball, Dow was the Big 8 Conference MVP as a junior and a senior, and was recognized as team MVP twice.

Off the court, Dow is Jonesville's salutatorian of 2007, and is the president of her senior class. She was also a Rotary Scholar and is part of the National Honor Society.

Geelhoed was a standout athlete at Lowell High School, where she helped lead the Red Arrows volleyball team to two district championships. She was named to the OK White All-Conference team as a senior in 2006. In basketball, Geelhoed helped lead Lowell to the 2006 semifinals, and guided the team to back-to-back conference and district titles, with a regional championship in 2006. She played for USA michigan and the InSide Out teams at the club level in the Lowell area.

The Hillsdale College volleyball team is coming off a spectacular 2006 campaign that saw it go 29-2 and win the GLIAC South Division championship with an undefeated regular season. The Chargers open play in the 2007 campaign by participating in the Florida Southern Invitational Aug. 24-25.
