September 6, 2007 - Just one more weekend of matches before the No. 7-ranked Hillsdale College volleyball team can begin GLIAC play. That tournament will take the Chargers to Ashland, Ohio this weekend, for a series of four matches starting at 2 p.m. Friday against 24th-ranked Northern Kentucky.
Hillsdale will also take on Wheeling-Jesuit (6 p.m. Friday), Bellarmine (9 a.m. Saturday), and Lock Haven (1 p.m. Saturday). The Chargers come into play this weekend with a 7-2 overall record.
The opening match of the tournament figures to be a key one for Hillsdale. Northern Kentucky is off to a strong start to the season, and is the only team to have defeated Ashland this season. NKU figures to be one of the stronger teams in the Great lakes Region, and a Hillsdale win here would boost the Chargers' opening regional ranking.
Hillsdale defeated Bellarmine 3-0 in last weekend's tournament at Findlay. In an early-season tournament in 2006, Hillsdale swept Lock Haven 3-0, when Lock Haven was ranked 15th in the nation. The last time Hillsdale and Wheeling-Jesuit faced one another was the 2005 season.
The Chargers will return home next weekend to open GLIAC play. Hillsdale hosts Northwood University at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. The next day, the Chargers face Saginaw Valley State University starting at noon, with both matches scheduled for the Jesse Philips Arena.
The Chargers have the reigning GLIAC South Division Player of the Week in Melissa Bartlett. A senior outside and middle hitter, Bartlett is second in the GLIAC in kills and in points per game. Bartlett won the conference's player of the week honor once last season.
Sophomore Kittrick Smith is off to the best start of her young career, ranking fifth in the GLIAC in kills per game. Junior Stephanie Booms ranks second in the conference in assists per game, while senior Megan Howard is fourth in digs per game. Hillsdale, as a team, ranks second in the conference in team hitting percentage.
