Charger volleyball team opens GLIAC play on good note with 3-0 win over Northwood
September 14, 2007 - It was close, but in the end, it was a win the Hillsdale College volleyball team would gladly take.
In the opening match of GLIAC competition, the Chargers ran their conference winning streak to 21 matches with a 3-0 win over visiting Northwood University at a raucous Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while the 25th-ranked Timberwolves suffered their first loss of the season, and are 12-1 and 0-1.
A homecoming weekend crowd of nearly 450 packed the gym on a night when Hillsdale defeated Northwood for the fourth time in a row. Northwood represented the fifth nationally ranked team the Chargers have already faced this season. Hillsdale is ranked 17th in the nation in the latest poll.
Each game was closely contested, with Northwood holding a lead ater both teams scored into the 20s in the first two games. But the Chargers were able to limit their errors at those key times in each game, and were able to reach the 30-point finish line first. There were 10 lead changes and 26 tie scores in the match.
Sophomore middle hitter Emily Bennett enjoyed her finest

collegiate match vs. the Timberwolves, picking up a career-high 12 kills to go along with an impressive .556 hitting percentage. Bennett did an excellent job at finding the holes in the Northwood defense and hitting over top of the defense.
Senior Melissa Bartlett led Hillsdale with 16 kills, while hitting .414 for the match, and getting 13 digs. Junior setter Stephanie Booms was her usual consistent self with 49 assists, three kills and four digs. Senior Megan Howard had a team-high 14 digs, and had two service aces. Sophomore Kittrick Smith played strong in the second and third games, nad finished with 13 kills.
Northwood was led by two-time North Division Player of the Week Lana Sorokina, who had 20 kills and hit .457 for the match. Sarah Pollard was the only Northwood player to get double figures in digs, finishing with 10.
Hillsdale jumped out to an impressive offensive start to the match, hitting .421 as a team in the first game. The team then cracked down defensively, limiting Northwood to sub-.200 game hitting percentages in the second and third games.
The Chargers will play at home at noon Saturday vs. Saginaw Valley State University.
