What a comeback! Volleyball team rallies from 0-2 deficit to beat SVSU
September 15, 2007 - The Hillsdale College volleyball team has won a lot of matches over the past few years, but very few in the manner it did Saturday afternoon. news story image

The Chargers came back from an 0-2 deficit to nip an improved Saginaw Valley State University team, 3-2, before a Homecoming Weekend crowd Saturday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale, now owners of a 22-match GLIAC winning streak, are 11-4 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC. SVSU falls to 12-3 and 1-1 in conference play.

Overall, the match couldn't have been much more closely contested. There were a total of 37 ties and 11 lead changes in the match, however there were none of either in the decisive fifth game, where the Chargers' conditioning and ability to play well in the clutch made the difference.

Hillsdale jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fifth game, after winning the third and fourth games by the slimmest of margins, 30-28 in both games. Although the Cardinals rallied to within two in the final game, the Chargers were able to put it away, celebrating one of their biggest comeback wins in recent years.

Junior setter Stephanie Booms came within one of her career high in assists in a match, with 65. She also had 16 digs, four kills and two block assists to lead the way for Hillsdale.

Four players cracked double figures in kills for Hillsdale, led by Melissa Bartlett's 24. Sophomore Emily Bennett recorded 12 kills in a match for the second consecutive day, while sophomore Kitrick Smith had 14 kills, and senior Jen Pilot delivered 11 kills and six total blocks. Bennett's seven total blocks, and four solo blocks, are a career-high.

Saginaw Valley showed what an improved team it is, by winning the first two games by scores of 30-27 and 30-26. Allison Schlinkert, a high school teammate of Booms', led the Cardinals with 25 kills and a .327 hitting percentage. Setter Amy Howard dished out 55 assisst, while Carmer Schacher had a match-high 23 digs.

Hillsdale held Saginaw Valley to a team hitting percentage of .095 in the fifth game,. the lowest of any game in the match. SVSU actually had a better hitting percentage that Hillsdale in the match (.230-.203), but the Cardinals committed 13 service errors and had six fewer total team blocks in the match.

Hillsdale's 22-match winning streak in the conference is the longest currently active in the GLIAC.

Hillsdale will be home again next weekend, hosting Ashland at 7 p.m. Friday and Findlay at 2 p.m. Saturday.
