Cross country teams compete at prestigious Spartan Invitational
September 16, 2007 - One of the elite college cross country invitationals each year is the Spartan Invitational, held in East Lansing. The Hillsdale College men's and women's cross country teams were there Friday afternoon.

The 14th-ranked Charger men's team finished sixth as a team at the meet with 157 team points. GLIAC rival Grand Valley State University took first overall with 27 points, followed by the host school, Michigan State, who had 35.

The Chargers were led by Michael Mayday, who finished 24th overall with a time of 26:09. He finished 11 seconds and four places ahead of teammate Joel VanDerworp, who was 28th at the race. Experienced senior Alex Schmidtendorff was next, taking 32nd with a time of 26:23.

Hillsdale's women's team faced a very difficult field, which featured the host Spartans taking the top six individual places at the meet.

Freshman Erin Brunko is a key part of Hillsdale's bright-looking future for the women's team, and led all Charger runners with a 26th-place finish and a time of 23:11. Sophomore Erin Cvengros was the next Hillsdale runner to cross the finish line, taking 39th with a time of 23:30.
