Hillsdale volleyball team completes sweep of Wayne State, 3-0
September 18, 2007 - It wasn't always easy, but the Hillsdale College volleyball team stayed undefeated in GLIAC play Tuesday night thanks to a 3-0 win over Wayne State University in Detroit.

The Chargers won the games by scores of 30-20, 30-23 and 30-28. It is the fourth straight 3-0 win for Hillsdale over the Warriors, dating back to the 2005 season.

Wayne State led for much of the early part of game three, when the Chargers deployed a very young lineup, that saw all four freshman see significant playing time. But Hillsdale was able to inch in front after the game was tied 23-23 at one point, to hold on for the win.

The Chargers, still ranked 17th in the nation, now stand at 12-4 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC. The team will face a pair of familiar foes this weekend, when Ashland and Findlay visit the Jesse Philiips Arena for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Friday's match begins at 7 p.m., while Saturday's will tip off at 2 p.m.

Tuesday's win over Wayne State was not a breeze for the Chargers. The Warriors played with tenacity and effort, forcing Hillsdale to work for many of its points. There were 10 lead changes in the match, including five in the first game.

Senior Melissa Bartlett was an overpowering force for Hillsdale in the match, recording 18 kills to go along with 14 digs. Sophomore Kittrick Smith added 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage.

Junior Elisse Shank established a career high with six kills in the match, and hit .545. Most of her action came in the third game of the match. Emily Bennett also had an error-free match, picking up five kills in 10 attempts.

Junior Stephanie Booms, the reigning GLIAC South Player of the Week, had 46 assists, eight digs and two kills for the Chargers. Senior Megan Howard had a team-high 20 digs, while freshman Sydney Dow added 11 digs.
