Chargers were able to play with that kind of skill and intensity against the Oilers Saturday, and solidified their hold on first place in their division.
Hillsdale improved to 5-0 in the GLIAC with a 3-1 win over the visiting Oilers Saturday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena. The 17th-ranked Chargers are now 14-4 on the season, while Findlay falls to 14-5 and 3-2. Hillsdale has now won 25 straight conference matches, dating back to Oct. 22, 2005.
Coming off an emotionally charged win Friday night vs. Ashland, the Chargers showed little signs of letdown vs. the Oilers, playing extremely well in each game they won. Hillsdale looked crisp in a 30-23 game one victory. Findlay improved its play in the second game, beating Hillsdale by an identical 30-23 score. But Hillsdale took strong command of the match, closing it out with wins of 30-20 and 30-24.
One part of Hillsdale's game that saw significant improvement over the weekend was its serving. Against Findlay, Hillsdale delivered 11 service aces, while committing eight errors. Although the error count was still high, the plus-three ratio was a big improvement over recent matches for the Chargers. Findlay had nine aces and 10 errors Saturday.
Freshman Sydney Dow delivered four of those aces, including two in a row during a crucial stretch of the fourth game, when Hillsdale broke a 17-17 tie to take the lead for good. Dow also had four digs in the match.
Senior Melissa Bartlett had more than 20 kills for the second match in a row, leading all players with 21. She also had 10 digs, and finished with 23 total points. Sophomore Kittrick Smith had 10 digs and hit .273 for the match.
Junior Elisse Shank (pictured) continued her fine play from this week, contributing seven kills, two aces and four digs to Hillsdale's victory. Senior Megan Howard had a match-high 22 digs, while junior setter Stephanie Booms had 44 assists, seven digs and three kills with a .429 hitting percentage.
Mallory Fleming led the Oilers with 19 kills, while powerful opposite side hitter Kelsey Wesaw had 13 kills.
Hillsdale will make its annual trek to Erie, Pa. next weekend to take on Mercyhurst and Gannon.
