Grand Valley hands Charger volleyball team second straight heartbreaking defeat
October 13, 2007 - For the second time in two days, the Hillsdale College volleyball team took a talented opponent to a fifth game on the road.

However, also for the second time in two days, the Chargers went down to defeat, 3-2, to Grand Valley State University Saturday afternoon in Allendale. Hillsdale is now 19-6 overall and 10-2 in the GLIAC. The Lakers are 22-2 and 12-0 in conference play.

The match was breathtakingly close throughout, with each team winning a game 31-29. The Lakers triumphed in the fifth game, 15-11.

Hillsdale won the first game 30-24, before losing the second game 31-29. The Lakers also won a close game three, 30-27, before falling to the Chargers 31-29 in the fourth game. There were a total of 39 ties and 12 lead changes in the match.

Senior Melissa Bartlett followed up her career-high 32 kills on Friday with 29 more Saturday vs. GVSU. Sophomore Kitt Smith set a new career-high with 20 kills. Freshman Amanda Bigney played her best match of her career with nine kill and no errors in 15 attempts. Senior Jen Pilot added eight kills with a .375 attack percentage.

Junior Stephanie Booms handed out 64 assists, while senior Megan Howard came just short of her career-high with 34 digs.

The Chargers hit .216 for the match compared to .225 for the Lakers. GVSU hit .368 in the fifth game, getting eight kills with just one error.
