Charger men lose heartbreaker in home opener
November 19, 2007 - The lead belonged to the Hillsdale College men's basketball team for most of Monday night's home opener. But "most" did not include the final 90 seconds.

The Chargers played well for most of the home opener against the University of Indianapolis. But the Greyhounds cranked up the defense and made clutch shots in the game's final two minutes to escape with a 78-76 win over the Chargers at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 1-2 on the season, while UIndy is 2-0.

Hillsdale held the lead from early in the first half until the game's waning minutes. The Chargers led by as many as 10 in the first half (28-28) and eight in the second half (65-57). But Indianapolis finished the game on a 21-11 run in the last 10 minutes. A 3-point basket by UIndy's DeAndre Brock with 1:46 left in the second half gave the Greyhounds the lead for good.

UIndy won the game despite an explosive offensive performance from Hillsdale junior Tony Gugino. A 6-9 center, Gugino set a new career-high with 33 points, including 23 in the first half, to lead the Chargers. Gugino hit 12 of his first 13 shots from the field, and had seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Junior guard Keith MacKenzie added 13 points, four rebounds and six assists for Hillsdale, and junior Travis Worst tossed in nine points. Senior Tim Homan and junior Evan Steward each scored eight.

Brock led the Greyhounds with 22 points in the game.
