Women's basketball team signs six incoming freshmen for 2008-09 season
November 20, 2007 - Hillsdale College women's basketball coach Claudette Charney is pleased to announce the signing of six talented players that will make up the freshman class of 2008-09 for the Chargers.

Five of the six players hail from Michigan, which is in contrast to the current freshman class, none of whom are from Michigan. Three of the incoming freshmen are also less than an hour's drive from the Hillsdale College campus.

The six signees are: Kellee Wonders from Hudson High School, Katie Bildner from Grand Rapids West Catholic High School, Dana Cook from Addison High School, Elizabeth Brannick from Jackson Lumen Christi High School, Chelsea Harrison from Lowell High School, and Courtney Ferguson from Van Buren High School in Findlay, Ohio.

Wonders has helped to lead a resurgent Hudson girls basketball program during her career. She led the Tigers to their first LCAA championship since 1974 last season, and has averaged 11 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and 3.5 steals per game throughout her three-year varsity career. She's been voted team MVP and was named First-Team All-League, First-Team All-Area by the Hillsdale Daily News, and Second-Team All-Lenawee County. She's spent five seasons playing for the Lenawee Magic AAU team.

Bildner, who is a native of Comstock Park, is a 6-foot tall player who can play either guard or forward. She was a Class B All-State selection in 2006, and is a strong defensive player. She was named to the Grand Rapids All-Area team in 2006, and was First-Team All-League. She was also part of her school's 4x400 relay team in track that was All-State. She averaged 13 points and six rebounds per game last season, and shot 74 percent from the free throw line. She has a 3.8 grade point average in high school, and has played for the Lakeside Hoops AAU team.

Cook, another local prospect from Addison, has enjoyed an award-laden prep career, which includes being named the Cascades Conference Player of the Year twice in her first three years. She's also been named Player of the Year in Lenawee County twice and is a two-time selection as an All-Jackson Area player.

Brannick has also establishd herself as one of the top players in the Jackson area during her successful career at Lumen Christi High School. She will enter her fourth year as a starter in the upcoming prep season and has been named team MVP twice. She was First-Team All-Conference in 2005 and 2006, and was the National Collegiate Scouting Association Student-Athlete of the Month in January 2007. She was named to the Jackson Citizen Patriot Dream Team in 2006 and was an Academic All-State selection in 2006. For her career, Brannick has averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game. She has career-highs of 37 points and 18 rebounds in a game so far in her high school career. She has played for the Jackson Jets and Detroit Motor City Blazers AAU teams.

Harrison was a high school teammate of current Charger volleyball player Amanda Geelhoed at Lowell High School. Harrison helped lead the Red Arrows to a 44-7 record the past two seasons, including an appearance in the Class A state semifinals. A two-year starter at point guard, Harrison averaged 11 points, two assists and two steals per game in 2006 for Lowell. She was named Class A honorable mention All-State last year, and was named to the OK Conference White All-League team. She was among the top 10 free throw shooters in the state last year, making 81 percent of her shots from the charity stripe. Harrison also plays soccer at Lowell, and is her class treasurer as well as a member of the Lowell Rotary Club. She played for the Western Lakers AAU team.

Rounding out this talented class is Ferguson, the only out-of-state prospect coming to Hillsdale next year. She comes to the Chargers out of the backyard of conference rival Findlay. A 5-foot-9 guard, Ferguson helped lead Van Buren High School to the Blanchard Valley Conference championship last year, and averaged 11 points and eight rebounds per game. She is entering her fourth year as a starter on varsity, and carries a 3.5 grade point average. She's also a sprinter on the school's track team, and plays her AAU ball with the Ohio Starz.
