Homan's record-setting performance leads Chargers to 97-66 win over Saginaw Valley
December 8, 2007 - Senior Tim Homan wrote himself into the Hillsdale College men's basketball record books in more ways than one Saturday afternoon.
With his first two points of the game, Homan became the 29th player in Hillsdale College history to tally 1,000 career points.

With his last basket of the game, Homan became the first player in school history to make 10 3-point baskets in a game.
Add it all up, and you get Hillsdale's most resounding victory of the season, a 97-66 decision over visiting Saginaw Valley State University at Jesse Philips Arena. The Chargers are now 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC.
Homan scored a career-high 40 points, and electrified the big crowd with one 3-pointer after another. He scored 24 points in the second half, and was part of an unstoppable one-two punch offensively for Hillsdale.
Junior Tony Gugino was a force on offense, finishing with 30 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. He scored 21 second-half points, and combined with Homan for an amazing 45 points in the final 20 minutes. Homan's 24 second-half points were four shy of the school record of 28.
Gugino and Homan together, outscored Saginaw Valley for the game, 70-66.
As much offensive firepower as Hillsdale displayed in the win, it was on defense where the Chargers showed great improvement from their game vs. Ashland just two nights earlier. Hillsdale allowed 29 fewer points in this game, and held the Cardinals to 43 percent shooting from the field. Hillsdale outrebounded SVSU 30-26, and forced 16 turnovers, while committing just six.
The Chargers jumped out to a 40-27 halftime lead, thanks to 16 from Homan. But the best was yet to come.
SVSU closed the gap to 14 points when the score was 64-50 after an Adrian Taylor 3-point basket with 11:04 left in the game. Hillsdale responded swiftly with a 16-8 run over the next five minutes that shut down any hopes for a Cardinal comeback.
As a team, Hillsdale shot 16-for-30 from behind the 3-point stripe, and shot 59 percent fromthe field overall in the contest. Junior guard Keith MacKenzie contributed 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and no turnovers in a very well-played game.
The 16 3-pointers made by Hillsdale were seven short of the team record for a game, set back during the "Bernie Ball" days in December of 1992. Former Charger coach Bernie Balikian was fond of the 3-pointer, and his teams led the nation in threes made and attempted on several occasions.
Mario Mackey led SVSU with 24 points, making four 3-point baskets.
The Chargers next hit the court on Saturday, Dec. 15 for a game vs. Northwood Univesity in Midland. Tip-off time is 8 p.m. To view the box score from Saturday's game, click on the link below.
