Sharpshooting Charger men top Northwood, 82-63
December 15, 2007 - A week off from the basketball court did nothing to slow down the hot-shooting Hillsdale College men's basketball team.

The Chargers improved to 5-3 on the season, and 2-1 in the GLIAC, with an 82-63 victory over Northwood University Saturday night in Midland's Bennett Center.

In last Saturday's home win over Saginaw Valley State, the Chargers drained 16 3-point shots, led by senior Tim Homan's school-record 10. In Hillsdale's latest win, Homan once again led the way with 21 points, including five 3-point shots, to push the team over the .500 mark in conference play.

Homan made four of his 3-pointers in the first half that saw Hillsdale jump out to a 45-30 lead over Northwood, heading into the locker room. Between the second half on Dec. 8 and the first half on Dec. 15, Homan hit 12 3-point shots and scored 40 points for the Chargers.

But Northwood didn't take Hillsdale's hot shooting laying down. The Timberwolves pulled to within 58-51 halfway through the second half. But a three-point play by junior guard Keith MacKenzie put a halt to Northwood's momentum and its 12-0 run that sliced a 20-point Hillsdale lead by more than half.

Starting with MacKenzie's play, Hillsdale went on a 24-6 run to close out the home team.

Homan finished five-for-eight from 3-point territory, and over his last two games, has made 15 of 22 shots from beyond the arc.

Junior center Tony Gugino keyed Hillsdale's 24-6 second half run on offense, and finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. MacKenzie scored 13 to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Junior Travis Worst was the fourth Charger player to crack double-figure scoring in the game, picking up 11 along with seven boards.

Hillsdale steps out of league play twice next week, playing road games at St. Francis (Ill.) and Lewis University before taking time off for the Christmas holiday.
