Charger women take on St. Mary's deep in the heart of Texas
December 19, 2007 - The Hillsdale College women's basketball team took its game to the south this week, participating in the St. Mary's Christmas Classic in San Antonio, Texas.

The first game of the two-day tournament was played Wednesday night. Hillsdale lost its second consecutive game, 75-63, falling to 8-2 on the season. The Rattlers are now on a five-game winning streak, improving to 6-4 this season.

St. Mary's went on a 14-5 run to open the second half to pull into the lead. Although Hillsdale responded with a 12-5 run to close the gap to four, the Rattlers played very efficiently on offense in the second half, shooting better than 60 percent with just three turnovers in the first 16 minutes of the half. St. Mary's made some key 3-point baskets in the latter part of the second half to keep the Chargers at bay.

Junior Katie Cezat had an outstanding game for the Chargers, finishing with 24 points and 15 rebounds. She fell three points shy of her career-high in scoring, and tied her career-high in rebounds.

The two halves contrasted greatly from one another. The two teams combined for 90 points in the second half, with St. Mary's outscoring Hillsdale 50-40. The halftime score saw the Rattlers lead 25-23, the teams combining for just 48 points.

The first half was a back-and-forth contest, with each team trading baskets throughout the first 20 minutes. The Chargers played tough defense in the first half, limiting the Rattlers to 28 percent shooting from the field. Janay Miller had a productive first half, scoring six of the team's first nine points, generating eight first-half points in all.

Junior Claire Aubrey and Miller each finished with 10 points for Hillsdale. Aubrey also had seven rebounds and four assists in one of her best all-around games of the season.

St. Mary's was led by 17 points each by Mallory Moeller and Chastity Noble. Ashton Benford came off the bench to score 16 for the Rattlers.

The Chargers will take on Texas A&M International at 5:30 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. Michigan time, on Thursday.
