Charger men fall to Lewis in overtime
December 21, 2007 - Twice this season, the Hillsdale College men's basketball team has rallied to win games in overtime. Friday night, the team fell victim to that same formula.

After coming back from a six-point halftime deficit to force overtime, Hillsdale lost a non-league game to Lewis University, 82-73 in Romeoville, Ill. The Chargers head into Christmas with a 6-4 overall record, while the Flyers are 7-2 on the season.

Lewis led the game 40-34 at halftime, but the Chargers played some of their best defense of the season in the second half, limiting the home team to just 30 points as Hillsdale battled back to force the extra session.

However, the Chargers, a team averaging more than 84 points per game on the season, shot 0-for-10 from the field in overtime, including five straight misses from 3-point territory.

Conversely, Lewis shot 15 free throws in the five-minute overtime. Despite missing seven of those freebies, it was more than enough points for the Flyers, who outscored the Chargers 12-3 in overtime.

Three players fouled out for Hillsdale, including the team's two leading scorers, Tony Gugino and Tim Homan. Gugino was limited to 21 minutes on the court, and finished with nine points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Homan, who had scored 91 points in his previous three games, took just six shots from the floor and finished with seven points.

Junior guard Keith MacKenzie led Hillsdale with 24 points, while junior Travis Worst had his second consecutive strong offensive game, with 17. Lewis outrebounded Hillsdale 45-31 in the game, and outscored the Chargers 20-11 from the free throw line.

Hillsdale is next back in action on Saturday, Dec. 29 for a non-league game at Saginaw Valley State University starting at 3 p.m.
