Worst does his best to lead Chargers over Saginaw Valley in men's basketball
December 29, 2007 - Prolific scorer may not have been the role the coaches of the Hillsdale College men's basketball team had in mind for Travis Worst when the season started. But in the Chargers' past few games, that's exactly the role Worst has taken on.

Worst, a junior, set a new career-high in scoring for the second time in his last three games, netting a game-high 26 points to lead Hillsdale to a 94-78 non-league victory over Saginaw Valley State University Saturday afternoon. Hillsdale now heads into 2008 with a 7-4 overall record, and 2-1 in the GLIAC.

Worst was held scoreless the last time the Chargers and Cardinals hooked up on Dec. 8, but since then, Worst has turned into a prime scoring option for coach John Tharp and the Chargers. In the team's past four games, Worst has scored 77 points, by far the best four-game stretch of his career.

In Saturday's win, Worst was 9-for-14 from the field, and drained four 3-point field goals. He also dished out three assists in 37 magnificent minutes on the court. Worst established a career-high with 23 in a 97-96 win over St. Francis (Ill.) on Dec. 17.

All five Charger starters scored in double figures in the game. Hillsdale raced out to a 49-30 halftime lead and wasn't challenged from there, as the team won for the sixth time in eight games.

Junior Tony Gugino scored 17 points, making seven of his 12 shots from the field. Junior guard Evan Steward turned in his strongest performance of the season, getting 16 points, a career-high nine rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes. Junior Keith MacKenzie added 11 points, four boards and seven assists, while senior Tim Homan put up 15 on an efficient 5-for-7 day from the floor.

The Chargers shot a blistering 65.9 percent from the field in the first half, and shot 58 percent for the game, compared to 41 percent for SVSU. The Chargers shot 15-for-25 from 3-point land in the game as a team. In their two meetings with Saginaw Valley this season, the Chargers have made a total of 31 3-pointers in a pair of wins.

Hillsdale will return to conference play Thursday, when it begins the always-challenging trek through Ohio. Hillsdale faces Ashland University at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by a Saturday game at the University of Findlays.
