January 3, 2008 - The GLIAC's top scoring team had a night to remember Thursday.
The Hillsdale College men's basketball team put together a yeoman's effort on the road Thursday night, defeating Ashland

University 112-110 in an incredible overtime affair. The Chargers are now 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC heading into Saturday's game at the University of Findlay.
Coming into Thursday's game, the Chargers had been averaging a conference-high 84 points per game. The team blew that figure out of the water in one of the best road performances the team has put on in many years.
Ashland defeated Hillsdale a month ago, 95-80, and had established itself as one of the GLIAC's top teams early in the season. The young Charger squad has been on a roll since then, winning six out of their past seven games, none sweeter than this victory, their first over Ashland since the 2004-05 regular season finale.
The 112 points scored by Hillsdale are the most since Dec. 21, 2002, when the team defeated U-M Dearborn 112-76. Three players scored at least 27 points, and Hillsdale had to overcome an unbelievable scoring night from one of Ashland's players.
Eagle guard Brett Wackerly scored a game-high 38 points, but it wasn't quite enough against a Charger offense that had every element working at full capacity.
Senior Tim Homan led Hillsdale with 31 points, going 13-for-19 from the field in 44 minutes on the court. He was 4-for-8 from 3-point territory, and the Chargers as a team hit 14 shots from beyond the arc.
Junior guard Keith MacKenzie had a season-best 29 points, his most in a Charger uniform. He also dished out nine assists and was 10-for-11 from the free throw line.
Junior center Tony Gugino added 27 points for Hillsdale, and led the team with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Junior Evan Steward added 17 and matched MacKenzie's 10-for-11 performance from the free throw line. Hillsdale made 26 of its 30 free throw shot attempts, each make being key in a game that was played as tightly as this one.
Halftime ended with a 45-45 tie. Each team scored 54 points in the second half, with the Chargers holding a 13-11 edge in the extra session. This was the fourth overtime game played by Hillsdale this season, and the team is now 3-1 in such contests.
Hillsdale put on an impressive shooting display from the field in the second half, shooting 67 percent in the half to match the powerful Ashland offense. The Chargers controlled the boards and possession of the ball in overtime, as evidenced by their 11 to 7 advantage in field goal attempts in the final five minutes.
Ashland jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first half, but the Chargers clawed back to knot the game by intermission. The lead changed hands 14 times and there were 13 ties in the game.
