January 5, 2008 – Katie Cezat waited two seasons to put her talents on display for the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team. Saturday afternoon, she enjoyed the finest game of what has been a breakout season.
Cezat scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Chargers to their third consecutive win, 88-74 over the University of Findlay Oilers at the Croy Gymnasium. Hillsdale is now 11-2 on the season and 4-1 in the GLIAC with the win.
Cezat, a junior forward, was 11-for-17 from the field and hit all 11 of her free throws. She also collected 12 rebounds, one game after tying a school record with 21 rebounds in Thursday’s win at Ashland.
The Chargers had to fight off a hot-shooting Findlay team in the first half. The Oilers’ first 21 points all came from beyond the 3-point arc, giving the home team an early 21-20 lead. But Hillsdale ran an effective offense, with several different players stepping up to make shots. The Charger offense has scored a season-high 169 points in the past two games.
Hillsdale outscored Findlay 25-16 over the final eight minutes of the first half to enter the locker room with a 45-37 lead. The Chargers did an excellent job of keeping the Oilers from getting too close throughout the second half. Findlay pulled within eight, 59-51, with 12:30 left in the second half. The Chargers responded with a 10-2 run, keyed by five points from freshman Kara McCormick, to jump out to a 14-point lead.
Senior forward Julie Slot, fresh off a career-high 32-point performance Thursday at Ashland, turned in another excellent game, with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes on the court. Sophomore Brooke Knight scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half, and showed good shot selection in the contest. Sophomore Janay Miller had nine points and a career-high nine rebounds, and turned in a scrappy effort on both ends of the court.
Findlay finished the game 12-for-22 from 3-point land, but shot just 39 percent from the field overall. The Chargers were 54 percent from the field, and as a team, made 28 of their 31 free throws.
Hillsdale is back home Thursday, hosting Lake Superior State University at 6 p.m.
