January 10, 2008 - Returning home for the first time in more than a month, the Hillsdale College men's basketball offense picked up right where it left off in its last home game, defeating Lake Superior State University 99-81 Thursday night at Jesse Philips Arena.
The Chargers are now 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC. The team is off the rest of this weekend before it's two-games in two-days trip to the Upper Peninsula next weekend.
Hillsdale put up 97 points in its last home game, a Dec. 8 win over Saginaw Valley State. The Chargers improved upon that number by two, getting great offensive balance throughout the game.
All five starters scored in double figures for Hillsdale, the first time that's happened this season. The 99 points figures to keep the Chargers No. 1 in the GLIAC in scoring offense this season.
Leading the offensive stampede was senior forward Tim Homan, who scored a game-high 31 points. Homan also moved into 20th place on Hilllsdale's all-time scoring list. Homan has scored 71 points in his last two home games.
The Chargers shot brilliantly from the field, making a season-best 61 percent of their shots. The team was 10-for-21 from 3-point land, and made 15 of its 18 free throws.
Hillsdale jumped on the Lakers right away, taking an eight-point lead in the first eight minutes of the game. At times, the Chargers played a very small lineup, with players like Homan and freshman Nick Meinert being forced to play against the Lakers' big men because of foul trouble to Tony Gugino. But the team kepts its composure and set up Homan for 21 first-half points that were key in helping the Chargers take an 11-point lead into halftime.
Hillsdale wasted little time in extending the lead in the second half. A 10-2 run in the first 2:51 of the second half increased Hillsdale's cushion to 19. The teams basically traded baskets the rest of the way, as the Lakers had no answer for Hillsdale's offensive diversity and firepower.
Despite playing just 18 minutes due to foul trouble, Gugino had another terrific game, finishing with 19 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior Travis Worst matched Gugino's output of 19, making 8-of-11 shots from the field.
Junior Keith MacKenzie scored all 16 of his points in the second half, draining four 3-point baskets. Junior Evan Steward played a fine two-way game for the Chargers, contributing 11 points, four assists and two steals.
Ryan Kuhl led Lake Superior State with 22 points in the game.
