January 19, 2008 - The four-game winning streak of the Hillsdale College women's basketball team came to an end Saturday, with an 84-67 road loss to Michigan Tech University in Houghton.
The loss drops Hillsdale to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the GLIAC. The Chargers will have a chance to get back into the win column Sunday, with a contest at Northern Michigan University starting at 2 p.m.
Despite the loss, the Chargers remain in first place in the South Division, thanks to two losses this weekend by Gannon University. Hillsdale is 5-2 in the conference, while the Golden Knights are 5-3.
The Huskies, who are now 14-3 and in first place in the GLIAC North Division, led the game most of the way, gradually building a nine-point lead at halftime, and refusing to let the Chargers gain any ground in the second half.
The game was evenly played on the stat sheet and cleanly played on the court, as the two teams combined for just 17 turnovers in the entire game. But MTU's Katie Wysocky turned out to be too much for Hillsdale to handle.
Wysocky, the reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year, led all players with 26 points, going 10-for-16 from the floor.
The Huskies were superb from the free throw line, making 23-of-26 attempts, outscoring Hillsdale by seven points in that department.
Freshman Kara McCormick tied a career-high with 17 points to lead the Chargers. Junior Katie Cezat was held to 13 points, three blocks and nine rebounds, while senior Julie Slot added 16 points. Sophomore Brooke Knight put together a fine stat line, with eight points, six rebounds and eight assists.
Michigan Tech has now defeated Hillsdale in four of the past five meetings between the teams. The Chargers won last year's meeting in Hillsdale to snap a three-game losing streak to their rivals from the north.
