January 24, 2008 - The fine defensive effort on display up north last weekend by the Hillsdale College women's basketball team continued over into its home game vs. Mercyhurst College Thursday night.
The Chargers set a season-low for points allowed for the second consecutive game in a 71-37 victory over the Lakers. The Chargers strengthened their hold on first place in the GLIAC South Division with the win, and are now 14-3 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
After allowing just 46 points to Northern Michigan in a win Sunday, Hillsdale maintained its tough defensive play with a smothering effort against the Lakers. Hillsdale forced a season-best 34 turnovers by the Lakers, and led the game for the final 39 minutes.
The team recorded 16 steals, led by five each from Janay Miller and Brooke Knight. The sophomore guards enjoyed one of their most productive combined games of this season.
Miller set a career-high in scoring for the second game in a row, throwing in 19 points to share scoring honors with senior Julie Slot. Miller scored 13 of her points in the first half, one shy of her previous career-high, also set in Sunday's win over NMU.
Miller showed aggressiveness shooting the ball, particularly in the first half. Her pullup jumper was on target, and she finished the game 8-for-15 from the field. Her eight field goals made were also a career-high.
Knight added six points and seven assists, against just one turnover in her performance. Junior forward Katie Cezat played 27 minutes and finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Cezat has grabbed at least eight rebounds in all 17 of Hillsdale's games this season.
The Chargers gradually built a 41-17 lead by halftime, and were able to get the full rotation of players into the contest. Junior Katie Eckinger grabbed a career-high five rebounds in 10 minutes, while freshman Laura Barczak had six boards in 10 minutes on the court.
The Chargers host Gannon University, the team that has ended their season three years in a row, for a 1 p.m. game Saturday in Jesse Philips Arena.
