College Mourns Passing of Art Professor Patric Fourshe
Patric Fourshe passed away on January 29, 2008, as result of complications following a massive heart attack suffered on January 23. Professor Fourshe was an instructor for the graphic design area of the Art Department as well as Daughtrey Gallery Manager and Web and Graphic Publicity Manager for the department. Fourshe began teaching part-time for the College in 1997, and in 2005, his full-time position was established.

"Professor Patric" (as he often liked to sign his work) was born in the Detroit area on April 10, 1943. He earned a B.A. (with honors) at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1968. After that, he worked steadily in the illustration and advertising layout design market in Detroit for several years. In 1972, he became professor of advertising design at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. He earned numerous awards for his work from the Graphic Arts Guild and had work published in annuals produced by the Society of Illustrators. In addition, for many years he was the graphic design editor for the Sunday supplement magazine published by the Detroit Free Press.

By the 1990s, Fourshe had become disenchanted with urban life and acquired 80 acres of undeveloped woodland property in the Bird Lake area of southern Hillsdale County. There he built a Cape Cod-style house that overlooked the private nature preserve on the property. Fourshe loved teaching Hillsdale College students and riding his motorcycle on cross-country excursions. Many of these trips were to visit his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter in Kansas.

The Department of Art will host a retrospective exhibit of Patric Fourshe's artwork as its lead exhibit in the Fall 2008 semester.
