January 31, 2008 - Out of all 16 victories this season by the Hillsdale College women's basketball team, Thursday night's stands out.
The Chargers defeated Grand Valley State for the first time in five years, 77-65 at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 16-3 overall and 9-2 in the GLIAC. Grand Valley falls to 13-7 on the season and 8-3 in the GLIAC.
No team in the GLIAC had defeated Hillsdale more times in a row than Grand Valley. But Thursday night, after a slow start, the Chargers put forth a superlative defensive effort to turn the game completely around. On the offensive end, it was junior Katie Cezat who once again reached new heights with her performance this season.
Cezat scored a career-high 34 points, making 14-of-20 shots and all six of her free throws in an incredible performance. She did an outstanding job of finding open spots in Grand Valley's zone defense. Her teammates also took excellent care of the ball, and didn't force the ball into Cezat, but found her when she shook free of the Laker defense.
Grand Valley opened the game strong, playing with quickness and aggressiveness, particularly on defense. The Lakers jumped out to a 23-13 lead in the game's first 13 minutes. Hillsdale was struggling to get good looks at the basket during that stretch.
Then, the Chargers took over, going on a 22-5 run to end the first half with a 35-28 advantage. Cezat was held scoreless in the game's first 13 minutes, but scored all 12 of her first-half points during that half-ending run by the Chargers.
The Lakers jumped right back in the ballgame in the early part of the second half, slicing Hillsdale's lead to one on two different occassions. But, Grand Valley was never able to take the lead in that second half, as the Chargers slowly pulled away.
The Chargers went on a 10-2 run after the score was 44-43 to build a double-digit lead. That played right into the hands of the Chargers, who were continually able to find Cezat with patience and good ball movement.
Cezat also had 12 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead Hillsdale. Sophomore guard Brooke Knight added 10 points and 10 assists, while senior Julie Slot contributed 18 points, making all five of her free throws.
Hillsdale will host Wayne State University Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
