Cezat shatters scoring record in Hillsdale's 67-64 win over Wayne State
Her 42 points, 18 free throws made set new marks
February 2, 2008 - In the span of seven days, Hillsdale College junior women's basketball player Katie Cezat has broken four school records. Three of those fell in an otherworldly performance Saturday afternoon.

Cezat set a new single-game school scoring record with 42 points to push Hillsdale to a tension-filled 67-64 victory over Wayne State University Saturday afternoon. The Chargers tied their best-ever 20-game start to a season with the win, and are 17-3 overall. Hillsdale's 10-2 GLIAC record keeps them in first place in the GLIAC South Division.

Cezat also set new records for free throws made and attempted in the game, as she drained 18 of her 23 attempts from the free throw line. She broke both previous record by five each, and bested the old scoring record by four. Beth Hilbink held the single-game scoring record when she had 38 points back on Feb. 11, 1995.

The previous record for free throws made in a game was 13, by Kelly Spielhaupter, set on Jan. 11, 1997. The previous record for free throw attempts in a game was 18, set by Jenny Nadeau during the 1986-87 season.

Despite Cezat's record-setting performance, the Warriors played a very tough ballgame, and had the contest tied within the last four minutes. Wayne State's guards did an excellent job of forcing turnovers, and played with quickness and aggressiveness. They also made four 3-point shots from a standstill position, frustrating the Chargers defense.

But the Warriors had no answer for Cezat, who moved well without the ball, and forced three WSU frontcourt players to foul out of the game while trying to guard her. Cezat finished 12-for-19 from the field, and had a game-high 16 rebounds.

Freshman guard Kara McCormick has had a knack for making clutch 3-point baskets this season, and Saturday's game was no exception. She hit a triple from the wing to turn a two-point deficit into a one-point lead (61-60). Hillsdale would never lose the lead thereafter.

Sophomore guard Brooke Knight had a career-high 11 rebounds, and sophomore Janay Miller had 12 points for the Chargers. Jasmine McCall led Wayne State with 20, to go along with five steals.

Hillsdale will make the Erie, Pa. trip next week, traveling to Gannon for a 5:30 p.m. Thursday contest.
