February 2, 2008 - History was made Saturday afternoon inside Jesse Philips Arena.
For the first time in more than 60 combined seasons of men's and women's basketball, two Charger players scored more than 40 points on the same day.
Women's basketball player Katie Cezat set a school record with 42 in the women's game. Holding up his end of history on the men's side was junior Tony Gugino, who lit up Wayne State University for a career-high 41 points. Gugino and the Chargers enjoyed a 74-54 win over the Warriors to improve to 12-9 overall and 6-6 in the GLIAC.
Gugino played a marvelous all-around game, going 17-for-23 from the field and picking up 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. He set the tone for the day by nailing a 3-point shot in the game's opening seconds, and built on that shot from there.
Hillsdale raced out to a 14-2 lead on Wayne State, only to see the Warriors battle back to make it a two-point game in the first half. The Chargers responded, and went into halftime holding a 38-29 lead.
That lead expanded quickly in the second half, as the Chargers went on an 11-0 run to jump out in front, 49-31. Wayne State never threatened after that.
Tim Homan and Keith MacKenzie each hit two 3-point baskets, and finished with 10 and eight points, respectively. MacKenzie also had eight assists and seven rebounds in 36 minutes on the court.
Lorenzo McClelland led Wayne State with 16 points.
The Chargers will travel east next week to take on the two Erie, Pa. schools, starting with a Thursday contest at Gannon University.
