Charger women clinch South Division championship with 90-55 win over Mercyhurst
Women's basketball team now in first place overall in GLIAC
February 9, 2008 - Thanks to its seventh win in a row, the Hillsdale College women's basketball team now stands alone atop the GLIAC.

The Chargers played a spectacular second half in a 90-55 victory over Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. Saturday afternoon. The victory gives Hillsdale a 19-3 overall record and a 12-2 mark in the conference. Coupled with Ferris State's win over Michigan Tech, Hillsdale now has the best GLIAC record in the conference. The win also clinches the 2007-08 GLIAC South Division championship for the Chargers. Hillsdale has a four-game lead on Wayne State with three conference games left for each team to play.

The host Lakers got off to a strong start and led the game 22-17 late in the first half. But a second-half explosion by the Chargers was preceded by a 15-3 run to end the first half. The team was able to turn a five-point deficit into a seven-point lead going into intermission.

Hillsdale has been playing strong second halves during their current seven-game winning streak. Thursday night, the Chargers outscored Gannon 48-24 in the final 20 minutes. The team improved upon that performance Saturday vs. Mercyhurst.

Hillsdale outscored the Lakers 58-30 in the second half. The Chargers set new season-highs for points in a game and points in a half. But most pleasing about the second-half play was the offensive balance the team got.

Junior forward Katie Cezat missed 10 of her first 15 shots (all in the first half) but still ended up with 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead all players. Thanks to the team's dominant second half, four different players scored in double figures and every player on the roster scored at least two points.

Senior Julie Slot finished with 14 points and a team-high six assists. Junior Claire Aubrey and sophomore Janay Miller each went five-for-eight from the field, and finished with 12 and 13 points, respectively.

Sophomore Kayla Whitmyer scored a career-high seven points, while freshman Laura Barczak had eight points, making all four of her field goal attempts.

Hillsdale was 13-for-32 from the field in the first half, but came back to shoot the lights out in the second half. The Chargers shot a sizzling 22-for-30 in the second half (73 percent).

Hillsdale faces a big home test Thursday night when it hosts Ferris State University in a key game to determine who could end up hosting the GLIAC Tournament. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
