Women's basketball team passes big test with win over Ferris State
February 14, 2008 - Thursday night's women's basketball game between Hillsdale College and Ferris State University was a matchup of two of the strongest teams in the GLIAC. This high-paced, intense matchup lived up to that billing, with the Chargers coming out on top, 83-71 at Jesse Philips Arena.

Hillsdale remains in first place overall in the GLIAC, with a 20-3 overall record and 13-2 in the GLIAC. The Bulldogs are now 15-9 overall and 10-5 in conference play.

The Chargers defeated Ferris State for the third time in a row, dating back to the 2006-07 regular season. The Chargers are ranked 22nd in the nation and second in the Great Lakes Regional rankings.

Ferris State featured the GLIAC's No. 1 scoring offense, and the conference's preseason player of the year, Rachel Folcik. Although Folcik scored 24 points, the Chargers were able to limit her to 8-for-20 shooting from the field, while getting good balance offensively on the other end.

The matchup of Folcik and Hillsdale's Katie Cezat was a premier one in the game. Cezat outscored her counterpart by four points, as she finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Twenty-two of Cezat's points came in a dominant first half.

Cezat also became Hillsdale's single-season blocked shot record holder in the game. She now has 32 blocked shots this season, surpassing the old record of 29, held by Caitlin Kennedy in 2002-03.

Ferris State opened the game strong, and had a 28-22 lead with 7:46 to go in the first half. The Chargers, who have the GLIAC's stingiest defense, then took control, going on a 14-0 run over the next three minutes to turn that six-point deficit into an eight-point lead. Hillsdale then finished the first half on an 11-2 spurt to carry a 48-33 edge into halftime. Sophomore Janay Miller scored five of Hillsdale's 11 points in that final run before halftime.

The Bulldogs hung around through much of the second half, cutting what was a 21-point Hillsdale lead down to as little as nine with less than five minutes left. Butthe Chargers counterpunched, as they have all season, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Claire Aubrey and Julie Slot to help keep the Bulldogs from building any momentum.

Aubrey enjoyed one of her best games of her collegiate career, getting a career-high 16 points. She hit two 3-point baskets, and was 5-for-9 from the field. She also had five rebounds and three assists, and did a superior job of on-the-ball defense throughout the game.

Slot added 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots to the Hillsdale attack. Sophomore Brooke Knight had six points, five rebounds and 10 assists while once again logging 40 minutes of playing time. Miller had nine points, while freshman Kara McCormick hit two more timely 3-point baskets in the second half, and finished with eight.

The Chargers will travel to Tiffin, Ohio for a non-league game against Tiffin University Saturday afternoon. The game starts at 2 p.m. Click on the link below for the box score from the game.
