February 16, 2008 - There's something about the second half of a game that makes the Hillsdale College women's basketball team up its level of play and intensity recently. The latest opponent to find this out the hard way was Tiffin University.
After entering halftime with a deficit, the Chargers outscored the Dragons 45-18 in the final 20 minutes of a 77-54 victory Saturday afternoon in Tiffin, Ohio. The non-league victory is Hillsdale's ninth in a row and improves the team's record to 21-3 on the season. That mark represents the best 24-game record in school history, surpassing the 20-4 record compiled by the 2002-03 team.
Rarely have the Chargers trailed at halftime of any game this season, but Tiffin played well at home in the game's opening 20 minutes, holding a 36-32 lead. But Hillsdale would hold Tiffin to half of its offensive output from the first half in the second half. The Dragons shot 5-for-26 in the second half (19 percent), and made just two two-point baskets in the final 20 minutes.
On the other side, the Chargers shot the ball extremely well from all angles. The team shot 60 percent in the second half from the field, made four of its six 3-point attempts, and all nine of its free throws.
On Feb. 7 and 9, against Gannon and Mercyhurst respectively, Hillsdale outscored those teams 48-24 and 58-30 in the second halves of those games. In Hillsdale's last three road games, it has outscored the opposition by a combined 79 points in the second half.
Junior forward Katie Cezat enjoyed another dominating performance for the Chargers, leading all players with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Three other players cracked double figures for Hillsdale, led by 12 points each from Claire Aubrey and Julie Slot. Janay Miller contributed 11 for Hillsdale College.
The Chargers will play their final regular season home game Thursday against the University of Findlay. But Hillsdale, the 2008 GLIAC South Division champions, are guaranteed of hosting a first-round tournament game at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1. The team will wrap up this truly memorable regular season on Feb. 23 at Wayne State.
