February 16, 2008 - A jump shot by junior Tony Gugino with two minutes left in the second half of Saturday's game proved to be enough of a difference for the Hillsdale College men's basketball team.
Playing a tightly contested non-league road game at Tiffin University, the Chargers got out of town with a 62-60 win. Hillsdale is now 14-11 on the season, and will host nationally ranked Findlay in its home finale Thursday night.
On Jan. 29, these same two teams played in Hillsdale, with the Chargers winning an 87-62 contest. The Dragons, now 3-22 on the season, played much more competitively in this game, one that featured 14 ties and eight lead changes.
Gugino, who finished with 11 points, tied a career-high with five blocked shots. Senior Tim Homan nailed five 3-point baskets, and led the team with 17 points. Junior Keith MacKenzie scored 13 for the Chargers, and had four assists and five rebounds. Center Chris Skaggs made a strong contribution with 10 points.
MacKenzie hit three 3-point baskets, which along with Homan's five, provided a key margin of victory for Hillsdale. Both teams shot lower than 42 percent, and each made 24 field goals in the game. But the Chargers outscored the Dragons 24-15 from beyond the arc, providing a crucial advantage in an otherwise evenly played game.
For the second straight game, Hillsdale did a good job of taking care of the basketball. The team had 15 assists compared to just 10 turnovers. The Chargers have just 17 turnovers in their last two games, both victories.
