February 21, 2008 - First, it was single-game records, now, Katie Cezat is breaking single-season records.
Cezat set the women's basketball single-season rebounding record in Hillsdale's 86-47 victory over the University of Findlay Thursday night at Jesse Philips Arena. The win also gives the Chargers the best overall conference record heading into next week's GLIAC Tournament. Hillsdale, ranked 19th in the nation, is now 22-3 overall and 14-2 in the GLIAC.
Cezat now has 306 rebounds for the season, breaking the former record held by Caitlin Kennedy and set during the 2002-03 season. Cezat finished with 14 points and eight rebounds in 34 minutes on the court.
Cezat's wasn't the only record set Thursday night. Junior guard Claire Aubrey tied a school record by going 7-for-7 from the field, racking up a career-high 19 points in an outstanding performance. Her 1.000 shooting percentage has been set a few times in women's basketball history, most recently by Nikki Wustman on Jan. 18, 2007 against Northern Michigan. Wustman went 9-for-9 from the field in that game.
Hillsdale took control of the game from the outset, and didn't trail in the final 38 minutes of the contest. The Chargers received one of their most balanced offensive attacks of the season, with four players scoring 14 or more points.
Senior Julie Slot - honored before the game at Senior Night - was aggressive from the opening tip, and had a dominating performance, scoring 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting. She also had eight rebounds and six assists versus just one turnover. She nailed three 3-point field goals, giving her 44 for the season, tied for 10th on the school's single-season top 10 list for 3-pointers made.
Aubrey hit both of her 3-point shots, and was 3-for-3 from the free throw line, giving her a perfect shooting performance on the court. That is a rare accomplishment for any player taking that many shots in a college game, and is an example of Aubrey's continually improving offensive game. She has always been a gritty defensive player, but her offense has been a welcome part of Hillsdale's current 10-game winning streak.
Sophomore guard Janay Miller added 16 points to Hillsdale's total, shooting 7-for-12 from the floor. Sophomore guard Brooke Knight did a fine job of running the team's offense, and led all players with nine assists, to go along with four points and three steals.
Hillsdale's opponent in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament is still undetermined. The three teams ranked below the Chargers in the South Division - Gannon, Ashland and Wayne State - are all tied with 9-7 GLIAC records. The Chargers will host the fourth-place team in the division on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Brittany Wells led Findlay with 10 points in the game.
