February 21, 2008 - When Hillsdale College traveled to Findlay, Ohio to face the Oilers on Jan. 5, the final score of the game was 82-60. In Thursday's rematch at Hillsdale, the final score was nearly identical.
The Oilers showed the Chargers why they are so highly regarded around the country in an 82-59 victory at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale falls to 14-12 overall and 7-9 in the GLIAC, while Findlay, ranked No. 6 in the latest national poll, is 23-3 on the season.
The powerful Oilers ran to a 42-25 halftime lead, shooting 53 percent from the field while enjoying a big rebounding advantage on the Chargers. For the game, Findlay outrebounded Hillsdale 41-24, and forced 14 Hillsdale turnovers.
Five Findlay players scored in double figures, led by 18 from Morgan Lewis. Point guard Marcus Parker added 14 with two assists and two steals.
Playing his final home game of his fabulous career, Charger senior Tim Homan opened the game with a 3-point shot, and finished with 14, making all seven of his free throws. Homan, the 16th-leading scorer in men's basketball history, was honored before the game at the team's Senior Night.
Junior center Tony Gugino recovered froma rough start to make six straight baskets in one stretch, and finished with a game-high 19 points, to go along with six rebounds and two blocked shots. Homan and Gugino were the only Chargers to score in double figures in the game.
Findlay is now 35-5 all-time against Hillsdale, and the Chargers haven't beaten the Oilers since the 2001-02 season.
The Chargers will wrap up the regular season, and shoot for a GLIAC Tournament spot, Saturday afternoon with a game at Wayne State, starting at 3 p.m.
