March 1, 2008 - Just two short years ago, the Hillsdale College Men’s Track & Field team nearly finished in last place at the GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. But, after a third-place finish in 2007, and another third-place finish at this weekend’s Championships, the Chargers have re-established themselves as one of the premier programs in the GLIAC.
The Chargers used a total team effort to accumulate 91 points, which trailed only Grand Valley State (199.66) and Ashland (147). And, along the way, the unranked Chargers managed to knock off 17th-ranked Saginaw Valley State, which finished in fourth place with 55.33 points.
The Chargers were led by their two All-Americans, Jason Stomps and Jared Krout. Stomps recorded a second-place finish in the 35# Weight Throw, and the program’s first-ever NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark, with a throw of 62’ 4 ½”. That mark ranks as the 5th-best throw in the nation, and also broke the previous school record by nearly two feet. Stomps’ teammate, Aaron Falk, helped to make the 35# Weight Throw a very successful event for the Chargers, as he finished in 3rd place with a throw of 60’ 7 ¼”. That mark currently ranks as the 12th best throw in the nation.
Krout also turned in a school-record setting performance for the Chargers. Krout captured first-place in the 200m Dash with a time of 21.86 seconds, which eclipsed his previous school record of 21.88 seconds. His performance was just .01 shy of the NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark, and ranks him 5th nationally. In addition, Krout also captured titles in the 400m Dash (49.25) and the Long Jump (23’ 1 ¾”). For his efforts, Krout was named the GLIAC Male Running Athlete of the Meet for the second consecutive year.
In all, the Chargers turned in 12 All-Conference performances. In the distance events, Shawn McKinstry took second-place in the 800m Dash (1:55.44) and contributed to the third-place Distance Medley Relay team, which provisionally-qualified for NCAA’s. In the jumps, Andrew Dodson claimed second-place in the High Jump (6’ 8”), and freshman Andre Holmes earned second-place in the Triple Jump and fourth-place in the Long Jump. Those performances earned Holmes, who doubles as a wide receiver on the football team, 2008 GLIAC Male Freshman of the Year honors.
Other Top-8 performers included the 4x400m Relay team (5th), Joel VanDerworp (6th-800m Run, 7th-Mile Run), Justin Dailey (7th – Weight Throw) and tri-captain Tim Sayers (8th-Mile).
The Chargers will return to action in two weeks at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Minnesota State University – Mankato.
