Wayne State stuns Chargers in opening round of GLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament, 67-64
March 1, 2008 - The old cliché about it being difficult to beat a team three times in one season was on full display Saturday afternoon at Hillsdale College.

Wayne State University advanced to the semifinals of the 2008 GLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament with a shocking 67-64 victory over the 18th-ranked Chargers in Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale still figures to advance to the NCAA Division II regional news story imagetournament as a high seed, and is 23-4 overall on the season.

It was the first home loss in two years for Hillsdale, and the first time Wayne State had defeated the Chargers inside the Jesse Philips Arena since 1995. Hillsdale will not play until the first round of regionals, which starts Friday, March 14.

Wayne State played extremely well from start to finish, jumping out to a 5-0 lead early in the game on Hillsdale, and hung on in the end with a series of clutch shots and free throw shooting.

A 3-point field goal by Warrior guard Jasmine McCall with 33 seconds left proved to be the biggest shot of the game. Hillsdale had led 60-59 with 2:22 to play, but Wayne State resonded with five straight points, none bigger than the three provided by McCall, who swished a shot from the corner after getting an offensive rebounds off her own missed layup.

The Warriors did an excellent job of using their quickness to drive the lane consistently, and set up other players for 3-point shots.

A big difference in the game came from beyond the arc, where Wayne State outscored Hillsdale 18-3 in the game. The Chargers shot just 1-for-9 from 3-point land, and shot 39.7 percent from the field overall in the contest.

The incredible offensive production of Hillsdale's junior forward Katie Cezat (pictured) was one constant in this game from the regular season. Cezat finished with 34 points and 16 rebounds, making 12-of-18 shots from the floor. In three games vs. Wayne State this season, Cezat has scored a total of 106 points.

Cezat also became Hillsdale's all-time single season scoring leader in the game. She now has 640 points for the season, breaking the record of 632, held by Sandy Skaisgir and set during the 1989-90 season. Cezat already holds school single-season records for field goals made, blocked shots and rebounds in a season.

In addition to their edge from the 3-point line, the Warriors outrebounded Hillsdale 43-33 in the game. McCall and Monique George shared scoring honors for Wayne State with 16 points each.
