Eberhard Geyer
Professor and Chairman of German, Overseas Coordinator
B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (Universität Würzburg and State University of New York)

Department:
German
Biography:
I was born and raised in Germany where I attended primary and secondary prep school (Gymnasium). My university studies were in English and German at Universität Würzburg and State University of New York. I’ve lived in the United States since 1976 and been a German professor at Hillsdale since 1985.
Research Interests:
19th and 20th century German literature and cultural history; the novella; American literature; special interest in the development and administration of international study programs for Hillsdale College.
Favorite class to teach:
I like all my classes equally, but enjoy those language or literature classes most where my great enthusiasm for the subject matter is reciprocated by my students.
What is your favorite student success story?:
Among the countless success stories—my graduates have pursued careers in academia, medicine, business, banking, government and international airlines—I enjoy recalling the career of Kevin O’Brien (1989), who combined his extensive knowledge in German with a law degree, and is now practicing international law in California.
What do you like best about Hillsdale College?:
The ability to work closely with students in small classroom settings, as well as the very high percentage of my students who are eager to study in Germany, either in the summer, or for a semester/year to complement their studies at Hillsdale College.
What advice would you give to prospective students?:
You will find a school that is relentless in the pursuit of the traditional liberal arts. Get ready to work hard.
What do you like best about the students at Hillsdale?:
They are the most polite group of people I know!
