After graduating from Hillsdale College, I went to Michigan State University where I received my M.D. After completing a residency at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, I became an obstetrician/gynecologist and have been working at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and St. Mary Hospital in Livonia for 16 years. I am currently chairman of the OB/GYN department at St. Mary Hospital. I also played football at Hillsdale and love to talk sports and medicine with anyone!

The most important lesson learned at Hillsdale College became most apparent to me after I graduated. The major theme of “family, church and local community” is strongly supported by the entire College community. To this day, I believe in that theme and remember that most about my experience at Hillsdale.

I would strongly advise prospective students to take advantage of the non-traditional learning that Hillsdale College has to offer. The seminars, highlighting so many brilliant speakers, that the College makes available should be a priority for all students. Also, studying in another city or abroad provides the student with invaluable learning experiences. Take advantage of all the professors’ insight on campus and all the non-traditional classroom learning that you can!

Initially, I was contacted by Hillsdale College to play football. Having a prior interest in the College, I was happy to have had the opportunity to play football (and be part of a National Championship team) and attend an academically sound school to pursue my first priority—going to medical school.

Hillsdale College set the foundation for my academic, personal and family life. After graduation, I went to medical school and was very well prepared for the rigorous pace necessary to be successful in medicine. The values fostered at Hillsdale enabled me to develop lasting friendships. I have also been blessed with a loving and dynamic family.

Being a part of a championship football team on the college level was definitely the highlight of my Hillsdale experience. Many of my teammates and I worked together for four years to accomplish this goal. I still wear my championship ring proudly!
