Biography:
I currently serve as a lobbyist for Michigan Legislative Consultants (www.mlcmi.com), a multi-client lobbying firm representing international, national and Michigan businesses and trade associations before the State of Michigan and local governments. Prior to joining MLC, I held several top legislative posts during more than 12 years in the Michigan Legislature. Most recently, I served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director for Michigan Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema, where I managed the Senate’s legislative activity. During my tenure in the Legislature, I also worked on a host of issues dealing with the environment, utilities, education, economic development and regulatory affairs. I also served as campaign manager for several successful legislative campaigns. I currently serve on the Hillsdale College Alumni Executive Board.
What was the most important thing you learned while attending Hillsdale College?:
A good education and a solid network of friends are the the most valuable tools in life.
What advice would you give to prospective students?:
Hillsdale College is a very small college, but well known worldwide. When world leaders describe their idea of a successful model for an institute of higher learning, they often reference Hillsdale College. Think about it. Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, George Bush, many secretaries of state, senators, congressmen and other leaders flock to Hillsdale College-sponsored events to give speeches and meet with students. Hillsdale is a very unique place, a place you would be proud to attend.
Why did you choose to attend Hillsdale College?:
I attended Hillsdale College because of its small size and its reputation as a national leader amongst liberal arts colleges. Because of its small size, I knew that I would have an opportunity to be a part of many extracurricular activities. The experiences outside of the classroom helped me in many ways in my career. The liberal arts education provided the time necessary to study a number of issue areas, not just the area of my major.
How did Hillsdale prepare you for life after graduation?:
The liberal arts education you receive from Hillsdale is one of the finest and most well-rounded a college can offer. Learning something from a wide array of topics prepares you for life and for your career. The small class sizes require you to be focused and involved with the class discussion. A small classroom is similar to working in a “board room” setting. After graduation, you will feel comfortable in a decision-making setting. Hillsdale’s reputation as a outstanding college opened many doors. I am very confident and proud to tell people that I graduated from Hillsdale College. On occasions, I have had people tell me that they are jealous that I went to Hillsdale. They wish they had picked Hillsdale.
What was the highlight of your Hillsdale experience?:
I have too many highlights to choose just one. For me, the Greek system and extracurricular activities helped shape me professionally and assisted me in my career.
