Faculty Spotlight

Daniel Sundahl
Professor of English
Ph.D., University of Utah

Department:
English and American Studies
Biography:
Minnesota Scandinavian by birth and temperament.
Research Interests:
My research "time" is ordinarily given to class preparation, daily, weekly, monthly and over the summer break.
Favorite class to teach:
Far and away: "Freshman Rhetoric and the Great Books." I would not have thought that years ago.
What is your favorite student success story?:
That story has to wait for the publication of my memoirs tentatively titled "Turtles and Other Slow Moving Creatures I Have Known."
What do you like best about Hillsdale College?:
Its unique history in American higher education and my privilege to have been a part of that history for 26 years.
What advice would you give to prospective students?:
Leave the cell phone at home; prepare to become part of a great enterprise that will speed by so quickly; but remember, too, you only go around once. Do something legally outrageous at least once during your college years.
What do you like best about the students at Hillsdale?:
I have found, over the years, that when I tell students that I trust them, they are faithful to that trust.
