Biography:
I was born, bred and educated in southeastern Michigan. I've been married to Kerry Laycock for more than 20 years and have one son, Andrew, a senior in high school, who plans to attend Trine University and study business and play lacrosse.
Research Interests:
My own area of interest is the art quilt. I dye and paint my own fabrics and then quilt them to make my artistic statement. My favorite periods in the history of art are Early Christian/Byzantine, and Baroque.
Favorite class to teach:
Art 203 (Prehistoric to Modern); studio: Design.
What is your favorite student success story?:
On the first day of Drawing I, I have everyone draw for an hour, to determine their level of skill. On the last day, I hand those drawings back. I’m delighted by the number of people who don’t even RECOGNIZE those drawings as their own, because they have improved so much!
What do you like best about Hillsdale College?:
The atmosphere that allows for the open discussion of all ideas.
What advice would you give to prospective students?:
Study early, study often. Get some physical exercise every day. Get a good night’s sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast. And, most importantly, don’t be afraid.
What do you like best about the students at Hillsdale?:
They are all committed to learning the beauty of clear thinking.
