Spencer Stegenga
1995
Marketing
Traverse City, Michigan

Title/Organization:
President/Owner, Bowers Harbor Vineyards
Biography:
I grew up on Traverse City's Old Mission Peninsula, a region well suited for vineyards with its protected harbor barrier and extended growing season. As a teenager, I worked for Chateau Grand Traverse, the only winery on the peninsula at the time. In 1991, my family decided to start our own winery, and we planted the first grapes. After graduating from Hillsdale, I became part owner of Bowers Harbor Vineyards with my parents. We produce world-class Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and a signature Bordeaux-style blend wine. Our wines have won numerous awards at international wine shows. Bowers Harbor Vineyards has also been recognized by the state of Michigan for its sustainable farming practices.

I co-founded the Wineries of Old Mission, a 501(c)3 organization to promote the seven wineries on the Old Mission Peninsula. We hold eight annual events, including Romancing the Riesling, Divas Uncorked, and The Great Macaroni and Cheese Bakeoff, often teaming up with local restaurants.

I met my wife, Erica Schoenherr Stegenga, '94, while at Hillsdale. We have two sons, Evan and Spencer.

What was the most important thing you learned while attending Hillsdale College?:
Hillsdale gave me the fundamental foundation and skills to go into the "real world."
What advice would you give to prospective students?:
Don't be afraid make a few mistakes, work harder than your competition, set goals, and be a good listener.
Why did you choose to attend Hillsdale College?:
Hillsdale's staff and students pursue the free-market ideals, not to mention the Judeo-Christian heritage and the fundamentals Hillsdale was founded upon.
How did Hillsdale prepare you for life after graduation?:
Hillsdale provided me with a well-rounded education, as well as conservative ideals and free-market thinking, that prepared me for life after college.
What was the highlight of your Hillsdale experience?:
In Dr. Davies' marketing management class, we had a simulation exercise in which we ran a shoe company. We made all of the decisions, soup to nuts, and ended up with the best return on investment of anyone in the country. And, of course, meeting my wife, Erica, was a highlight.
