Title/Organization:
Athletic Director and Secondary Greek and Omnibus (Liberal Arts) Teacher, Veritas Academy
Biography:
I grew up in Hudson, Ohio, as a homeschooled student along with my four younger sisters (two of whom have since joined the ranks of Hillsdale students and alumni). While at Hillsdale, I participated in intramural sports, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, Mu Alpha, and parliamentary debate. I was a member of Eta Sigma Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Fairfield Society, and I participated in the GOAL program, connecting musical students to needs in local schools and nursing homes. After attending Hillsdale College, I married fellow 2006 grad Kathryn Kauffman and spent two years at Westminster Theological Seminary, earning a Master of Arts in Religion. Since then I have been at Veritas Academy near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, teaching and directing their athletic program.
What was the most important thing you learned while attending Hillsdale College?:
Hillsdale College taught me to think carefully about the ideas and practices I have encountered in life. It helped me grow in discernment even as I grew in my faith and in my understanding of what is true, good, and beautiful.
What advice would you give to prospective students?:
Hillsdale’s incredible professors and liberal arts approach gives you a unique opportunity to take classes in many disciplines that will benefit you your whole life. I consider it a distinct privilege to have benefited from classes in economics, music, history, literature, chemistry, biology, classics, and journalism. And yet, classes are just the beginning of learning. The environment at Hillsdale encourages discussion and debate, such that I learned as much from midnight conversations in my dorm room as I did in my classes.
Why did you choose to attend Hillsdale College?:
I chose Hillsdale College largely because of friends who had gone there before me. I came to several CCA lectures and spent time on campus while in high school, which allowed me to experience firsthand both the education and the student life of the College. Being a part of that environment quickly convinced me that Hillsdale College was the right school for me.
How did Hillsdale prepare you for life after graduation?:
Hillsdale helped train me to think clearly and communicate effectively, and my classes and professors did so in a manner that encouraged my love of learning and passion to share what I had learned with others.
What was the highlight of your Hillsdale experience?:
The relationships I forged at Hillsdale, both with other students and with professors, have continued to impact my life since graduation. They provided wisdom, humor, and unforgettable memories over my Hillsdale years.
