Hobbies: I’d drop anything for walking among tall trees, watching sunsets, camping, and outdoor activities of any kind. I love letting my creativity run loose through art, music, and reading, and I enjoy cooking, team sports, and listening to people tell stories on front porches.

Favorite Book(s): Out of many, many titles, these come immediately to mind: Death Comes for the Archbishop, Gilead, The Little Prince, The Hobbit, and David Copperfield.

Favorite Hillsdale Memory: On a warm fall night, a friend and I sat by Lake Baw Beese in Hillsdale and looked up into a velvety black sky studded with diamond-like stars. In that silence, I remember the humility and wonder I felt as, what I had recently been studying, this dear friendship, and the glory of creation expanded within me into deep gratitude. Just like the multitude of stars I saw that night, these types of moments—whether in class or outside of school—are too numerous to count.

Words of Wisdom: Though I struggled, at first, in what seemed a tug-of-war between social life and academics, I gradually began to understand that my studies helped me see into humanity with greater depth, though only if I exercised this learning through interacting with and loving others. Life centers on relationships, however hard that may be. With this lesson in mind, I encourage students to avoid segmenting their lives into separate parts, limiting their interests, and separating themselves from others. Let what you learn from others and what you learn from your studies meld into a whole by taking moments to wonder at them and be grateful.
