Favorite Professor Story: My junior year, I took Old Testament as a part of my major. One morning, the professor invited the whole class (about 20 people) over to his house for lecture combined with breakfast. It was a snowy day, and he lived on the top of a huge hill. After almost sliding our car off the cliff on the way up, we made it to the quaint home. His daughter made cinnamon rolls, quiche, and cut up an enormous amount of fruit for us. The class all sat in front of the fireplace and proceeded to eat while listening to a lecture on how the Old Testament relates to Winnie the Pooh. As I sat there taking it all in, I knew at that moment the only place I wanted to be was on the top of a snow-covered hill with my Old Testament class in Hillsdale, Michigan.
Favorite Hillsdale Memory: This is always a tough question because I have so many favorites. My whole college experience was one big favorite memory. Coming from Seattle, I wasn’t able to go home very often. This provided the opportunity to travel the Midwest and East Coast with friends during breaks when I was unable to go home. I went to Florida, all over Michigan, and all over Ohio. As much as I loved the travel, I loved the memories made on campus even more. One of my favorite times was freshman year when my friends and I would have spontaneous dance parties in our rooms almost every single day for study breaks. That way, we got exercise, had fun, and relieved stress!
Words of Wisdom: Get involved! The more things you do, the more memories are made. Find a lot of different things you want to be involved in right away, and check them out. Sophomore year you will be able to narrow down your options. It’s easy to get involved freshman year because everyone wants you to be in their club or organization. Seize these opportunities. College is about academics, but in order to grow both the mind and the heart, it’s important to surround yourself with different social activities as well that will cause you to grow far beyond your college years.
