Harold Stock, ’11 (posthumous)—Captain of the 1908 football team who later led the post-World War II total renovation of the 1926 field house.
Frank “Muddy” Waters—Head football coach for 20 years, he led Hillsdale to seven consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football titles and finished with a 138-47-5 record. He and his 1955 squad took a principled stand that gained national attention when they voted not to play in the Tangerine Bowl, the equivalent of a national championship game, when Bowl officials declared that Hillsdale’s black players could not participate in the game.
Jack McAvoy, ’55—An all-around athlete, McAvoy also served as head basketball and football coach after graduating. He became athletic director in 1976 and was later selected to the NAIA Hall of Fame.
Howard Mudd, ’64—An offensive guard on the football team, Mudd went on to a seven-year All-Pro playing career in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears. He is also a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame.
Bill Young, ’50—A four-year standout in football, baseball and track, Young was selected a football Little All-American in 1947 and 1949 as a running back.
Gina Van Laar Lanser, ’87 (posthumous)—Valedictorian and Outstanding Senior Woman of the Class of 1987, she won the 1987 NAIA Cross-Country National Championship and was a seven-time All-American in cross-country and track.
Mark Law, ’76—The only Hillsdale athlete to be named repeat All-American in three sports–football, wrestling and track.
Dale Allen, ’81—A three-time NAIA All-American basketball player, he led the 1980-81 team to a fourth-place finish in the NAIA national tournament.
