Phase II of the Locker Room Renovation Project is complete and is ready for the 2007 season. This part of the project involved opening up some of the space between the old football locker room and the women’s locker room next door to nearly double the size of the football locker room.  Additional improvements included the addition of an access door to enhance laundry distribution, the removal of ceiling tiles to expand the vertical space in the room and the installation of a new Mondo rubber floor to replace the old carpeting.

The locker room is now known as the Frank "Muddy" Waters/Joseph M. Vijuk Locker Room, in recognition of the longtime former head coach and the All-American alumnus whose generous donation helped see this project through to completion.

During the two-month renovation, the College installed 99 new functional top-of-the-line wood-finished lockers with nameplates. The old lockers were removed starting in November 2006, and the new ones were finished in January of 2007. Although the lockers are in place, the ongoing sponsorship program continues.

Plaque with alum's name, position played, years of participation

The Locker Sponsorship Program was initiated to offset the costs of this project as well as to help perpetuate the tradition and history of the 116 years of Charger football! All Charger Football Alumni are encouraged to take a place of honor in the new locker room by “sponsoring” a locker through a gift or pledge of $1,000. Sponsorship will include a plaque displayed with the alum’s name, number, position played and years of participation on the locker currently occupied by the player with the same number. A miniature locker will be provided in recognition of participation. Involvement in this project also entitles participants to membership in the Gridiron Club.

Completion of this project is a major step forward and will greatly enhance the functional use of the football locker room. It will also be a very positive improvement to show potential student-athletes during the recruiting process.
