The Hoogland Center for Teacher Excellence is named to recognize the generous contribution of Charles R. and Kathleen K. Hoogland. Initially attracted to Hillsdale College by its institutional independence and loyalty to its founding principles, the Hooglands were especially interested in sponsoring a program to work with teachers across the country. A 1952 graduate of Yale University and a serviceman in the United States Navy from 1952-54, Mr. Hoogland was involved in establishing The Video Movie Club. As one of the first video rental stores in the country, the Video Movie Club evolved into what is now Family Video, the largest privately-owned video rental chain in the country.
