Teaching the Declaration of Independence

Participants will explore the principles of the Declaration of Independence, the challenge of slavery from the Founding to Lincoln, and the Progressive movement's critique of the American Founding.  They will consider such questions as: What are the basic principles on which the American system of limited, constitutional government rests?  Were the Founders wrong to accept slavery in the original Constitution?  Why did the Progressives reject the Founders' principles?  Lectures and discussions will be led by three Hillsdale College faculty members.  Registration is open to middle and high school teachers and administrators.
