In 1988, the Great Opportunities for Assistance and Leadership (G.O.A.L.) program was established on the campus through a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.  Since its establishment, Fr. Duane Beauchamp has been the program director.  The G.O.A.L. program provides 24-27 qualified students with the opportunity to coordinate volunteer opportunities between members of the student body and various nonprofit organizations in Hillsdale County.  In this way, G.O.A.L. provides these interested students with an educational base in working within the not-for-profit sector.  Through the leadership of G.O.A.L. scholarship students, members of the general student population are given the opportunity to bring alive the volunteer spirit that has been a part of Hillsdale College throughout its history.  Throughout the history of the G.O.A.L. program, Hillsdale College students have given on average over 19,000 documented hours of volunteer service annually to the local community.  G.O.A.L. also leads in the development of additional service activities for students not only during the school year but also during various breaks during the academic year.  G.O.A.L. promotes service above self, thereby providing unity and focus to existent campus-wide volunteer activities.

The G.O.A.L. Student Coordinator of Volunteers has the responsibility of overseeing the day-to-day management and coordination of the various G.O.A.L. programs and keeping an accurate record of volunteer progress and hours throughout the semester and the academic year.  First and foremost, the Student Coordinator of Volunteers is to aid the G.O.A.L. program director in running a smooth campus volunteer program that continuously seeks to meet ever-changing community needs and campus-wide opportunities for service above self.
