The founders of Hillsdale College, like the founders of our country, recognized the importance of morality and religion to the maintenance of a free society. As George Washington wrote, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports.”
Also like our country’s founders, the founders of the College saw a vital connection between liberal arts education and civil and religious liberty. Hillsdale College has always been non-denominational, and student participation in religious activities is not required, but such groups as InterVarsity—Hillsdale Christian Fellowship and the Catholic Society, as well as numerous local churches, are available to support and nourish student faith.
