The Legacy Endowment: A special fund supported by alumni, for alumni.
Legacy: An inheritance. Something that has come from a predecessor or the past. In college parlance, the child (or grandchild) of an alumnus.
$1,000 per year, per student
The Legacy Endowment has been established by the college, with the enthusiastic endorsement of the Alumni Association, in order to provide significant tuition discounts to the children and grandchildren of Hillsdale College graduates—i.e., students known as “legacies.”
Assets in this endowment already total nearly $800,000, generating proceeds (at 6%) of about $48,000 annually, thereby funding 48 grants of $1,000 each. For the time being, the College is committed to supporting (from the general operating budget) any such grants that this endowment is unable to fund.
In time, much more
It is the intention of the Alumni Association to build this endowment, not merely to fund these awards fully but also to allow us to increase their value. In due time, we hope the endowment will fund annual grants of 10 - 20% of total college costs. Today, that would be $2,500 to $5,000. The larger the endowment, the larger the awards.
Our immediate goal - $1 million
Our immediate goal for The Legacy Endowment is $1 million. Depending on how many legacy students are enrolled, this could support up to 60 grants of $1,000, or perhaps 40 grants of $1,500, or possibly 30 grants of $2,000 each.
Just Say, “Please designate my gift to The Legacy Endowment.”
This is an ambitious goal, and it will require your support. You may designate a gift of any size to the fund. Phonathon donations, President’s Club pledge payments, class gifts, the gift portion of an annuity or charitable remainder trust—all may be designated to this endowment. And, of course, you may always leave a bequest for this purpose in your will.
